Gibsonville, NC -- Police Chief Mike Woznick died from a heart attack Friday evening, Gibsonville Mayor Leonard Williams told WFMY News 2.

Williams said Woznick was cutting his grass when he had the heart attack.

"It was a shock to all of us," Williams said, noting Chief Woznick was at work Friday.

"I just kept saying, oh no, no. I couldn't believe that," said Dolly GGunnell, Owner of Lighting, ETC.

"He left saying, I got to get home and get my yard mowed. Well, he never finished mowing the lawn. He's not coming back," said Bennie Leach, Gibsonville resident.

Woznick, a 28-year veteran of law enforcement, began his career at the Gibsonville Police Department in May 1999. Before Gibsonville, Woznick worked for the Elon, Graham and Bell Haven police departments and was also a reserve deputy with the Alamance County Sheriff's Office.

Once he joined the force in Gibsonville, Woznick rose through the ranks as a patrol officer, K-9 officer, investigator, staff sergeant and captain before taking over as chief in 2007.

Chief Woznick is survived by his son Michael and fiancee Angel.
