High Point, NC -- High Point mayor, Bernita Sims, was investigated by the State Bureau of Investigations from March through April for a check she wrote to a family member, according to the North Carolina Department of Justice.

The DOJ confirmed Sims wrote a check to a family member for $7,000. That check was written to Sims' sister regarding an estate back in November 2012, according to the High Point Enterprise. The newspaper said the mayor's sister told police March 13 the check bounced.

The SBI's investigation began March 18 and ended April 23 and was prompted by a request from the High Point Police Department, a DOJ spokesperson told WFMY News 2.

Agents gave their findings to the District Attorney on April 23.

Sims' case is currently being reviewed by prosecutors in the Attorney General's office because of a request by the DA.
