Jamestown, NC -- Guilford Technical Community College is looking at purchasing a piece of land on High Point Road near its Jamestown Campus.
The piece of land is located at 6012 High Point Road and is 37 acres. The land includes a 253,000-sqaure-foot warehouse that would benefit the college. The warehouse was used in the past by Daimler Buses.
On Thursday, GTCC's board of trustees voted to move ahead with plans to pursue acquisition of the site.
Randy Parker, GTCC's President said the site is attractive to the college for several reasons, "The last occupants used the building for transportation related purposes so it offers a number of features that we need to expand our transportation training programs."
Parker also says it would be cheaper to renovate the facility instead of building a new one at its Cameron Campus.
GTCC originally planned to relocate its transportation and welding programs to an area located at 1117 NC Highway 68 in Oak Ridge.
The cost of renovations at the alternative site on High Point Road would cost $33 per square foot compared to $210 per square foot to build a brand new building.
GTCC has until August to make a decision about purchasing the site. Then the Guilford County Board of Commissioners and State Board of Community College must approve the purchase.
