Winston-Salem, NC-- A Triad woman crossed the finish line at the Boston Marathon just minutes before the bomb exploded.

Kathy Kirse, an avid and competitive runner achieved a lifelong goal just moments before the terror broke out. She crossed the finish line at the Boston Marathon.

Kathy's husband, Dr. Dan Kirse was there to support his wife. The two lived in Boston years ago.

The Kirse's four children stayed home in Winston-Salem with their grandparents. They talked to WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford about the emotions of the day.

On Monday morning they left their mom a message before going to school to say good luck and that they loved her. They were waiting for a text from their dad telling them when she finished. That text never came.

Haley Kirse found out about the bomb from a friend in her chemistry class. Nathan Kirse was also at school.

"My friend is telling me about the explosions at the finish line and what time they happened and I was like, wait I think my mom finished at that time or was supposed to finish," said Haley.

"I heard about how many injuries there were and there was a horrible feeling in my gut that what if she was one of the injured people or one of the people killed?," said Nathan.

Kathy did finish three hours and fifty-nine minutes from when she started. Kathy told News 2 that the support of her kids helped her get through the race. She reached her goal at a pace that possibly saved her life.

Sam Kirse said, "If mom had finished any later than you know I probably wouldn't be sitting here. I'd be probably looking for flights probably to get to Boston."

Haley said eventually she heard from her dad. It brought tears of relief.

The Boston Marathon was the fourth marathon Kathy has ran. Haley and Nathan Kirse run cross country at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem.

Kathy and Dan Kirse are on schedule to arrive back home to the Triad on Tuesday evening.
