Greensboro, NC -- The Greensboro Police Department is about to launch a new program that will allow the public to map crimes in the city.

You can see how the program works by visiting

Users simply need to click on a portion of the map or enter an address to see all of the crimes that have occurred near that location within the past 180 days. In addition, you can sign up to receive email alerts if a crime has occurred around or near a specific address. Accessing all of this information is free.

Greensboro Police Officer Douglas Campbell said, "This is a really easy way to get crime information without the imperfect methods people usually have."

This program also saves police time and makes it easy to find out what's happening in your neighborhood.

To learn more about a specific crime, you need to copy the Case Number from and paste it into the Greensboro Police P2C Website.

Instead of asking data analysts to search through crime data and send out individual reports, now anyone can run those reports from home. This frees up time for Greensboro Police computer experts to run more in-depth reports and do more crime analysis.

"They can look at these patterns of crime and spend a little bit more time scanning, analyzing and working with the patrol captains and specialty teams on developing responses to those problems," GPD Manager of Information Services Eleazer Hunt said.

You could have always asked the police department to create this kind of report for you. Now, it's at your fingertips. But, because it's so easy, will this affect the real estate market?

Greensboro Regional Realtors Association President Nancy Radtke said, "I think the information is already available. If people are going to be concerned about crime, they'll probably call a precinct captain or they'll get in touch with the police department and find out what they need to know anyway."

The program will not include information about most sex crimes to protect the victims. You can also download an app version of the program from your iPhone.

Purchasing the program cost $87,945. Federal forfeiture funds covered $48,445 of that cost. A $23,000 Justice Assistance grant and $16,500 from the annual police budget paid for the rest of the expenses.

The High Point Police Department also has the same system in place.
