Garner, NC -- A 14-year-old girl crossing the road to get to her school bus on NC Highway 50 was hit and killed by a car Monday morning.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol said that a 2001 Pontiac driving north hit the girl in front of her home around 6:30 am.
The bus was driving in the southbound lane, turned on its amber lights and was nearing its stop when the girl attempted to cross the street. However, Jeff Gordon with Highway Patrol said their investigation reveals that the school bus' red lights and stop arm were not activated.
Late Monday, Highway Patorl released the girl's name. She was 14 year-old Maria Fernandez Jimenez.
The bus was en route to Garner Magnet High School. Six students were on the bus when the teenage girl was hit.
