Mount Airy, NC -- Emergency crews were dispatched to a small plane crah just before 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
According to a spokesperson with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane had left the Statesville Municipal Airport and was headed to Mt. Airy Airport when it crashed west of the runway down an embankment.
FAA said the plane that crashed is a BD-5 aircraft.
Surry County Emergency Services said the pilot was the only person on board. He was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He said the pilot was conscious and alert when the was taken from the scene.
Hazmat crews were dispatched to clean a small fuel spill in the area where the plane crashed.
The FAA is scheduled to be on scene Friday to begin their investigation into the crash.
