12-Year-Old Ejected From Seat, Dies In Randolph County Wreck

Randolph County, NC -- A 12-year-old girl was ejected from her seat during a single vehicle wreck in Randolph County Tuesday evening and died.

NC Highway Patrol said the accident happened shortly after 7 pm. A 1999 GMC Yukon traveling west on Richland Church Rd. didn't stop at the intersection of Old US 421. The vehicle hit a pole and overturned.

Four people were in the car. Three of the passengers were in the backseat. The 12-year-old girl who died was sitting in the middle seat and was not wearing a seatbelt.

Trooper Greg Ingram with the NC Highway Patrol said the girl who died was, Leah Elizabeth Way.

Ingram said the two other kids who were in the back seat were wearing seatbelts. No other passengers were injured.

Martha Way, the driver, is not facing any charges.

The accident is still under investigation by Highway Patrol.
