Raleigh, NC-- The North Carolina Court of Appeals has reinstated murder charges against a man who kept a Durham woman's skeleton in a backpack.

The three-judge appeals panel ruled Tuesday that Durham County Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson was wrong in dismissing charges against Michael Dorman. Prosecutors say he killed 31-year-old Lakeia Boxley in 2008 and kept her bones for two years before his arrest.

Hudson dismissed the murder case in 2011, saying Durham authorities violated Dorman's rights by prematurely releasing Boxley's bones to her family for cremation. The judge said that destroyed key evidence before defense experts could examine the remains.

Tuesday's ruling upholds the view of former Durham District Attorney Tracey Cline, who was removed after publicly questioning Hudson's decisions dismissing charges against Dorman and an accused child molester.
