  • High Point, NC -- When you've waited months or years for a vacation, travel problems could not only ruin it, but they cost you.

For passengers aboard the Carnival cruise ship Triumph, their trip turned into a vacation nightmare.

Carnival reportedly reimbursed the passengers for the cruise, offered them vouchers for another free cruise, cash and travel expenses to get home.

But would travel insurance have helped them?

Pam Seagle, owner of Travel Leaders in High Point, has been a travel agent for 20 years.

Seagle said cruise lines make it perfectly clear, in the fine print, they can't be held responsible for anything.

However, if you're planning to set sail, you should still buy travel insurance.

Seagle said you should buy travel insurance for a cruise, for an international flight, and for any vacation package that cost more than $1,000.

Seagle said travel insurance is important because it covers you if you get sick or lose your job and you have to cancel at the last minute.

If your luggage is lost, travel insurance will make sure you're reimbursed.

And if you get sick or hurt when you're traveling in another country, travel insurance will pay your hospital bill, even when your regular health insurance won't cover it.

But according to Seagle, for most flights and hotel stays in the United States, it's not worth it.

"You need to really check and see what the cancellation policy is on your package. Be sensible. You don't want to spend money needlessly if there's not a big amount of money to be lost," said Seagle.

Seagle said the cost of insurance depends on the travelers' ages and the cost of the vacation. But for a family of four, it's on average, about $200.

"Well worth it for the peace of mind," said Seagle.
