Montgomery County, NC -- The public utilities department is advising residents to boil and conserve water after "major equipment failure" at the water treatment plant overnight.
The department says Montgomery County customers could experience water service outages and periods of low pressure.
The outages affect rural Montgomery County customers and town residents receiving water from the county's treatment facilities. The notice does not affect Handy Sanitary District customers.
To prevent the possible spread of bacteria from the water backup, the Division of Water Resources suggests boiling all water used for drinking, brushing teeth or in food for about one minute.
The public utilities department says residents could also see discoloration of their water, but this does not pose a health risk. To fix discoloration or air pockets, simply leave your faucet running to clear the water line.
Along with the advisory, the county is issuing a mandatory water conservation notice.
Montgomery County residents were asked to boil and conserve due to another failure at a water treatment plant in January.
The current advisories remain in effect until further notice.
