Kernersville, NC -- Triad Cub Scouts are doing their part to help stock local food pantries with this year's "Scouting for Food" campaign.

Today, we talked to Cub Scout Pack 779 as it assembled more than 1200 pounds of food to sell today at the Kernersville Lowes Foods on Nelson Street. The pack assembled the bags and customers purchased them from Lowes Foods to be delivered to food pantries.

Last year, the pack collected more than 3500 pounds of food to support area food banks and pantries.

The pack used the event to get a jump-start on the statewide "Scouting for Food" campaign that starts in February.

Locally, WFMY News 2's Food 2 Families is teaming up with Piedmont area Boy Scouts and Lowes Foods to fight hunger.

Next Saturday, Feb. 2, scouts will be distributing plastic Lowes Foods bags to homes across the Piedmont for residents to fill with food.

Packs will distribute more than 240,000 bags from Boone to Burlington.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Scouts will return to pick up the bags and folks are asked to have their food bags out on the porch by 9 a.m.

If you don't receive one of these special Lowes Foods bags, just look for collection bins or premade food bags at your local Lowes Foods store.

Last year, viewers donated more 220,000 pounds to Scouting for Food.
