Greensboro, NC -- You never know what to expect with a winter storm from freezing rain to a lot of snow that's why it's so important to come up with a disaster plan ahead of time. This is even more true for older adults who face their own limitations from financial to living alone.

Jennifer Nichols with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program stopped by our Good Morning Show to offer ways to prepare.

Seniors who live alone will want to have an emergency contact. They'll call this person if they need a ride, medication, food or anything else. Seniors also need to have a disaster kit. The kit should include current medicines, medical background information, emergency phone numbers, and non-perishable food and water.

Tips for preparing this week:

1. Keep a regular pair of good shoes but not slippers by your bed

2. Keep hearing aides and glasses in a small box by the bed secured by Velcro to keep it from sliding on furniture

3. Keep a flashlight by the bed
