Wentworth, NC -- Rockingham County officials are asking for a clarification on money used to fund a landfill study. The county paid $89,000 to Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB) for a study that looked into several issues including, whether the county needs a new landfill and what is the capacity of the existing one.

The county's public information officer has requested a clarification. She wrote in an email message: "The financial resources used to fund the GBB study came from our Enterprise Fund which is totally separate from our General Fund. The General Fund is supported by tax dollars but the Enterprise Fund is funded 100% by user fees and those users will see the positive impact of operational improvements to our landfill. We do not want the public perception to be that we spent "TAX" dollars on this study."

Just to be transparent, New 2 reported tax dollars were used in the process after this conversation with the county manager:

Reporter: From what I've read, correct me if I'm wrong, this study, I don't know how long it lasted, but it cost $89,000?
Lance Metzler (Rockingham County Manager): Yes.
Reporter: We're talking taxpayer money. How do you explain that to the taxpayers?
Metzler: Money well-spent. It's the best money the county has spent.
