Piedmont, NC -- Groups across the Piedmont are celebrating Martin Luther King Day with a number of planned events.

Here's a list of the Martin Luther King Day events happening near you:

Monday, Jan. 21

MLK Prayer Breakfast Celebration

Benton Convention Center, Winston-Salem, 7 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

This year's theme is "The Emerging Dream- A Present Day Reality."

 26th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast

Sheraton Hotel Greensboro at Four Seasons/Koury Convention Center, 7:30 a.m.

The breakfast is in honor of Dr. King's contributions to human rights with invitations extended to the community to share in the celebration.

 

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

All events open to the public, 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.

MLK Day Youth Rally & Fellowship Breakfast from 8:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church (950 File St., Winston-Salem); MLK Day March at 10:45 a.m. at Mt. Zion; MLK Day Workshops from noon-2 p.m. at WSSU (Anderson Center, Dillard Auditorium); MLK Day Celebration at 7 p.m. at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church (5000 Noble St., Winston-Salem)

Beloved Community "Day of Service"

McKinnon Hall (Moseley Center), Elon University, 9 a.m.

A day of service to commemorate MLK Day. There will be a discussion before and after the service.

 

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

International Civil Rights Center & Museum Events, 10 a.m. - after 7 p.m.

The ICRCM has several events planned throughout the day. All events are free and open to the public.

 

MLK Day of Service

410 Four Seasons Town Center, Greensboro, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The Volunteer Center of Greensboro will partner with Guilford County Schools and local colleges and universities for the MLK Day of Service.

 

11th Annual MLK Day N.C. Scholastics Basketball Classic

Greensboro Coliseum, 10:30 a.m. - until

The event will bring the best preps hoops action to Greensboro for a six-game holiday exhibition. Get your tickets from Ticketmaster.

 

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration

Conference Center, Davidson County Community College, 11 a.m.

An event to celebrate the life and teachings of Dr. King with an inspirational message from keynote speaker Andrew Watkins.

 

Annual MLK Noon Hour Commemoration

M.C. Benton Convention Center's North Main Hall, 12 p.m.

 

Tuesday, Jan. 22

Let Freedom Ring

Room 110 of the Administrative Building on the Davie Campus, 12:30 p.m.

A one-man play, written by Robert Clymire and starring Greenfair Moses III, on the life of Dr. King.

 

On Common Ground: Remembering the Past to Shape the Future

K.R. Williams Auditorium, WSSU, 7 p.m.

Singer, songwriter and social activist Harry Belafonte will present the MLK Jr. Day keynote speech. Event is free and open to the public.

 

Wednesday, Jan. 23

NC A&T, UNCG 2013 MLK Celebration

Aycock Auditorium, UNCG, 7 p.m.

Dick Gregory, comedian, humanitarian and civil rights activist will give this year's keynote speech.
