High Point, NC -- A child in High Point is recovering after being hit by a car at a bus stop Wednesday morning. The accident happened on Gordon Street at Kimery Drive around 7:30 am.
High Point Police said the bus was stopped with its stop-arm and lights activated. Officers say 21-year-old Eugenie Niyomwungere was driving in the opposite direction and hit 6-year-old Benini Secilia while she was crossing the street. Medical workers took Secilia to High Point Regional Hospital, where she was treated for cuts and bruises.
Police have charged Niyomungere with a felony count of passing a stopped school bus that results in injury. Officers say she told them she didn't see the bus.
Bus No. 271 was taking children to Montlieu Academy of Technology, according to a Guilford County Schools representative. No other students were harmed, and those who were on the bus made it to school safely.
This is the fourth incident involving a child being hit by a vehicle near a bus stop since the beginning of December.
