Winston-Salem, NC -- Police arrested a 23-year-old suspect they say robbed two banks in Winston-Salem over the past three months.
Officers arrested and charged Joshua Cardell Newell of Winston-Salem after a robbery at the BB&T Bank on Peters Creek Parkway.
Police responded to the bank around 7:30 a.m. and, as they arrived on the scene, a man ran from the bank and into a wooded area. Crews surrounded the area while other officers secured the bank. Around that time, a car attempted to speed away from the scene.
Newell wrecked his car as he tried to avoid police on Old Salisbury Road near Brewer Road. Police arrested him at the scene of the accident. They recovered a weapon and money that he stole during the robbery.
No one was injured in the robbery or single-car accident.
Police also connected Newell to a robbery at the Southern Community Bank on Peters Creek Parkway Nov. 11, 2012.
In that robbery, police say Newell walked into the bank behind employees and robbed them before running from the scene.
Newell is charged in connection to both of these bank robberies. He's being held in the Forsyth County Detention Center, but bond and a trial date have not been set.
