Greensboro, NC -- Gate City Transportation hosted a fundraising gala at NC A&T State University's Alumni-Foundation Event Center on Saturday evening for the new Cone Health Sickle Cell Center.
It is the first of many events scheduled this year to fund and maintain a 24-hour sickle cell clinic on The Wesley Long Campus of Moses Cone Hospital.
Roderick Jessup, president of Gate City Transportation, Inc. said the battle against sickle cell is personal for him.
"My Grandmother had sickle cell and she had to sit in waiting rooms for eight or nine hours because there was no one attentive to manage her pain, now the center's open and people won't have to sit around and wait for pain management. They'll get assistance right away."
According to Jessup, the event Saturday evening helped raise $32,000 for the center which is the first of its kind in North Carolina.
The goal this year is to raise 100 thousand dollars for the center.
