Lincolnton, NC -- A start-up North Carolina furniture maker celebrated as a sign of America's manufacturing rebound has closed just a year after President Obama had its president as a guest at his State of the Union address.

Lincolnton Furniture Co. president Bruce Cochrane and other officers didn't return messages Friday to The Associated Press. Local reports said it closed Thursday after a year of operation.

Cochrane launched the company in the hometown where his family built furniture since the 1850s. He aimed to make furniture in the U.S. after working as an industry consultant in China.

The attempt to restore American jobs in an industry that had flooded to low-cost Asian countries was highlighted in Obama's State of the Union address and a White House event on reclaiming overseas jobs.
