Kwanzaa Celebrates Family, Culture, Social Change

GREENSBORO - Wednesday is the first day of the week-long Kwanzaa celebration.

The Greensboro Kwanzaa Collective is hosting the Kwanzaa Celebration through January 1. Events run from 5 to 8 p.m. every night except Monday, Dec. 31. Events run from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday.

"Kwanzaa is a celebration of African Culture," Dawn Hicks of the Greensboro Kwanzaa Collective said. "We celebrate family, we celebrate community, we celebrate the end of they year, we reflect on all of the things good and bad that have happened this year."

The holiday started 46 years ago in the U.S.

Winston-Salem will have a city wide Kwanzaa celebration, as well.
