Dare County, NC -- The Department of Transportation announced this week that the Dare County highway closed following Superstorm Sandy is now open.
Crews shut down NC-12 after the storm pounded the coast, leaving parts of the roadway damaged or under water.
The department closed the four-wheel drive route, removed all checkpoints and reopened the road to all traffic Saturday.
DOT says drivers should still expect lane closures as construction projects, sandbag installation and dune reconstruction continue along the highway until further notice.
All ferry services have reopened as well. DOT says the emergency ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe will be removed.
The Ferry Division has all you need to know about coastal ferry service; you can also call 1-800-BY-FERRY (3779) and press 1.
