Greensboro, NC -- Is this on your grocery list? Eight hundred pounds of sugar and 120 dozen eggs. Wow! You need those kinds of numbers when you are making hundreds of cupcakes and cakes in a week.
This is the life of Mary Reid, the owner of Delicious Bakery on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro.
"Delicious came about from my sister.," says Reid. "We went back and forth with names and one day she came up with Delicisious and it just fit!"
Everything in the bakery is hand made. Initially their specialty was the decorated cakes, but the most popular item is now the cupcakes.
"I graduated from NC State 'woof!' with an accounting degree. I knew that is not what I wanted to do."
Mary says she never thought of herself as an artistic person, just crafty. When we see how the cakes are decorated, you might beg to differ with her!
She says the biggest hurdle was taking a homemade recipe that makes one cake, "and then you have to make 50 cakes! It's tweaking and borrowing and a whole lot of tasting to figure out what is good."
Mary started baking cakes in her apartment. There is no way the operation could fit in that space now! "I don't know what the future hold for Delicious. We could stay in the same location and be okay with that."
