Greensboro, NC - City crews are inspecting all 177 units inside the Heritage House building located at 310 W. Meadowview Rd.
A group of six community members filed a petition with the city asking for the inspection to be performed. Inspectors are walking door to door with police officers for security. City code only requires five signatures to launch an inspection of a rental property.
City of Greensboro Code Compliance Administrator Lori Loosemore said, "It did drain us for a couple of days having to put all of our resources in one area, but it needed to be done."
The inspectors are checking to see if the units meet the city's housing standards. According to the city of Greensboro, "More than 100 units have been inspected on the first, second and sixth floors. Inspectors found minor violations including leaky faucets, cracked switch plates and broken windows. They also found several major violations with electrical wiring in the common areas and some units had malfunctioning smoke alarms. No units were so bad that they were deemed uninhabitable. Notices to repair the major violations will be produced within the next 72 hours."
Inspections are scheduled through Wednesday, but city staff may complete the job early on Tuesday.
Greensboro Police know the building all too well. This year, they responded to more than 1,100 calls. Back in October, they responded to a murder. There have been other reports of domestic violence, vandalism, suspcious activity, fights, robberies and gunshots.
Lt. Larry Thompson said, "We're not going to be able to arrest our way out of the problems we're seeing there. We have to work together to pull all the resources together and forge a positive pathway."
Greensboro police have already met with some of the individuals who own units inside Heritage House. Police say the meeting went well, and they hope to work together to make the area safer.
