Raleigh, NC  --  A legislative committee set up to examine what North Carolina can do to crack down on illegal immigration is narrowing down recommendations to next year's legislature.

The state House committee on Thursday is expected to urge the federal government to seal the U.S. border with Mexico. The committee could include recommendations for General Assembly action on what types of identification for illegal immigrants should be accepted.

The Pew Hispanic Center estimates North Carolina ranks ninth in population among the states with what it calls 325,000 unauthorized immigrants, defined as foreign-born citizens of other countries who aren't legal immigrants.
