Burlington, NC -- The Burlington City Council amended a smoking ordinance that will affect more than 150 businesses in Wednesday's meeting.

The original ordinance, which regulated smoking in restaurants, now includes public businesses located in buildings with multiple tenants under the same ownership that are directly adjacent to restaurants.

The amendment passed unanimously.

The council estimates the ordinance will affect 160 businesses. Each of the affected businesses will receive signs that indicate the change in policy. The fire department will hand-deliver the signs, along with educational information, to each of the businesses.

The ordinance, effective Dec. 1, will be enforced by the Burlington Police Department on a complaint-driven basis, according to the city.

Violations will result in a $50 civil fine, which must be paid within 10 days.
