W-S Woman Shares Her Secrets To Haggling In Stores During Holidays

Winston-Salem, NC--  A local family proves that face-to-face haggling still works, even in big-box stores.

In a time when many of us are thankful for family, friends, and food, our focus will soon shift to shopping.

While many of us focus on clearance, discounts, and coupons, there's also another option for you....the art of haggling.

News 2's Liz Crawford talked to Theresa Gibson, a Winston-Salem woman who proves that haggling still works and can save you money during the holidays and all year long.

Gibson said there's no better time to haggle than right now.

"Haggling is usually best this time, with money being tight for a lot of people and Christmas coming up, you want to get the good toys for your children and your family but you want to get the best price, so now is the time to haggle."

Gibson has successfully haggled at stores like Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Target and Costco. Her husband isn't afraid to haggle either.  Steven Gibson often uses online prices to compete with in-store prices when he tries to haggle.

The Gibsons said the secret is having the time to haggle. A sales associate is more likely to take a percentage off the price after they've spent a lot of time with you.

In their experience, you almost always have to barter with a competing price.

"My husband says, 'well, Ya'll have any 10% off sales?' And they're like, 'No not this time.' And my husband says, 'well, Sears is having 10%.' And he says, 'well we'll give you 10% if you buy it here'," said Theresa Gibson.

Gibson also advises keeping your receipts because if the price drops in a reasonable time, you can usually take the item back to that store or a competing store and get the difference.

The Gibsons also prove that haggling is not just face-to-face. After 45 minutes of haggling on the phone, they were able to cut their monthly cable bill by more than half.

According to Money Talks News, here are some other ways for you to haggle during the holiday season:

  • Don't be afraid to ask.
  • Talk to the right person...it might mean asking for the manager.
  • Know where to shop...maybe at second-hand stores or local retailers.
  • Be aware of the best times to negotiate...it's better to haggle when there's not a crowd.
  • Don't be afraid to walk away...Theresa Gibson told News 2 she's left the store with nothing if it didn't go her way.
