Greensboro, NC -- Police charged a man in an Oct. 11 fatal shooting and standoff at Steeplechase Apartments on Adams Farm Parkway.
Brandon Lynch Benders, 27, is accused of shooting and killing Anstin Cieria Alston, 28, a woman he'd been in a relationship with for several years, according to police. The two moved into Adams Farm in June.
Benders recently recovered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered during his standoff with police. Once he recovered, officers arrested and charged him with first degree murder Monday.
On Oct. 11, Alston called 911 as Benders got physical with her. Neighbors who heard arguing and gunshots also called 911. Police arrived on the scene just after 2:15 p.m. and found Alston in a stairwell with gunshot wounds.
EMS transported her to Moses Cone where she later died.
Benders barricaded himself inside the apartment. Police heard a gunshot and forced their way into the apartment where they found Benders with a gunshot wound, according to a police report.
Police arrested Benders and took him to the Guilford County Jail where he's being held without bond.
Police say Alston tried to end the couple's relationship, which led to the argument. She had also started civil procedures to have Benders evicted from the apartment. The two lived together during the dispute.
Investigators say this wasn't the couple's first domestic violence incident; there had been another in the past that neither of the two reported to police.
