There are many rules when it comes to retiring a tattered or faded American Flag.

At the Elk's Lodge annual flag retirement ceremony, the worn flags collected throughout the year are officially retired.

The flag has to be held in place. They take apart the flag stripe by stripe and burn it. The "Union Jack" portion of the flag goes first, then the bottom of the flag.
