Reidsville, NC --When you find the strength to bury a loved-one, the last thing you want to go back and see is their gravesite raided.
According to Deputy Kevin Suthard, thieves stole 12 metallic gravesite vases from Roselawn Memorial Garden Cemetery. The incidents happened between Wednesday October 31st and Wednesday November 14th.
"I think it's absolutely despicable that somebody would steal from a cemetery," said Suthard. "There was a time when there seemed to be, I guess you'd call it 'honor amongst thieves' where you know some things were off limits: churches, cemetery, and stuff like that. Not anymore."
News 2 attempted to interview the director of the cemetery; we were referred to a woman in charge. She told us Roselawn would rather not speak about the incident because only 12 vases have disappeared.
She also said she doesn't know if the vases were even stolen -- even though the cemetery reported the incident to the sheriff's office. However, she did say she's reaching out to families and will replace the missing vases.
Investigators are now alerting scrap yards and pawn shops of thieves trying to make money out of the vases. If caught , the the thieves could be slapped with felonies for tampering with the graves.
If you know anything about the stolen vases , you can call the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office or Crimestoppers at 349-9683.
