Rankin Elementary 5th Graders Skype With 25 Soliders From Afghanistan

Greensboro, NC - Rankin Elementary students got to say hello to troops overseas through Skype with soldiers in Afghanistan.

The Skype event started with the Pledge of Allegiance and a 5th grader singing the National Anthem of Friday afternoon.

Students were able to chat with men and women from North Carolina National Guard 514 MP 1st Platoon. The 5th graders spoke with troops on Skype for about 20 minutes and were about to get personal questions answered by the troop. They asked about what they go through and see in Afghanistan.

The Platoon was deployed to Afghanistan in July 2012. According to school officials, this troop was recently hit by a suicide bomber back in October and lost three members, one of which was from Greensboro.

WFMY News 2 was told, that this was of the first times and maybe the only time that student will able to interacted with students.

The student were also able to meet military heros in-person. The kindergarten classes' collected candy bars, which will be sent to the troop within the next week or so.
