Thomasville, NC -- A former waitress at a Thomasville Restaurant was arrested and accused of manipulating tip amounts on customer's checks.
Judy Proffitt, 26, was charged with seven counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.
Investigators said they were notified by the owner of East Coast Wings on Randolph Street of Proffitt's actions. Proffitt was an employee there from February to June 2011.
A customer at the restaurant had notified the owner that his debit card had been charged too much after he had dined at the restaurant. The customer alleged that the amount of the tip had been altered from what they originally put on the check.
The owner told authorities that he pulled other tickets from the waitress and found that several tips had been altered.
Proffitt was taken before a Magistrate and received a $5,000 bond.
Thomasville police are searching for more victims in the case. They are asking anyone that dined at the restaurant between February and June of this year to check their bank statements for discrepancies.
Anyone that feels their credit or debit card was overcharged is asked to call Detective Boles at 336-475-5540.
So what can you do to keep your information safe? Detective Boles suggested leaving tips in cash, if possible. And if you're not comfortable letting your card leave your sight, ask to have it run in front of you. After you've left the restaurant, remember to check your bank statement for any discrepancies.
