Rockingham County, NC -- Hundreds of families could go hungry if someone doesn't step in to help.
The shelves at the Rockingham County American Red Cross Food Pantry are just about empty. The pantry accepts any and all county residents. They usually get help from the food bank, but even the food bank is struggling. Employees say the summer months are always hard, but the empty shelves already have them turning people away.
Ada Wells, Food Pantry Supervisor, said, "It is pretty desperate. We don't like turning people away and we just like to help them out when we can and... but if we don't have it, we can't give it."
The pantry usually feeds between four and five hundred families every month, and that can mean around a thousand individuals.
If you want to help, they need donations families can cook and stretch like canned vegetables, rice, beans, or frozen foods. Take your donation of food, or money, to the pantry. The address is 3692 Highway 14 in Reidsville.
