Nearly a third of all Americans are sleep deprived, according to the Centers for Disease Control. But the secret to a great night's sleep could be as simple as choosing the right mattress.

Consumer Reports tested some of the leading brands on the market. Bob Markovich is Home & Garden editor for the company. He talked with the Good Morning Show's Jackie Fernandez about what makes a good mattress.

Does more money mean a better deal?

"Absolutely not," said Markovich. Three of the top scoring mattresses were among the least expensive of those Consumer Reports tested.

Among innersprings, Simmons Beauty Rest Glover Part Firm Pillowtop ranked high in their testing for $780. The ratings said it was the best side support of any mattress they tested.

For memory foam mattresses, NovaForm Memory foam, a Costco brand, ranked high for back support. It came in around $900.

Which is better for support, foam or innerspring?

"It's not about the type or firmness," said Markovich. He said it's about which mattress provides the most support. Innersprings overall did a little better in their surveys, but the best one for you is the mattress that keep your spine relatively straight while you sleep.

Consumer Reports hasn't tested Sleep Number beds yet, but it could be a possibility in the future.

Advice for mattress shoppers:

"The biggest thing you can do is go to the store and try them out. Spend at least ten minutes on each side," said Bob Markovich.
