GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Science, music and specialized art supplies currently are absent from shelves at the Greensboro Teacher Supply Warehouse on Greengate Drive, where Guilford County Schools teachers shop for items to avoid having to pay out-of-pocket for classroom materials.

The Guilford Education Alliance estimates teachers spend an average of $400 to $800 of their own money each year on school supplies, so warehouses like the one in Greensboro are vital resources.

In conjunction with Leadership Greensboro and the Welfare Reform Project, the Teacher Supply Warehouse is hosting a specialized supplies drive through February and March, so as to allow GCS teachers to have a specialized shopping day April 5.

Kristin Medlin and Collins Pickup, with Leadership Greensboro, emphasized that in-demand science supplies are often simple household items that people would not associate as much-needed school supplies. Those items include aprons, beakers, rock collections, latex gloves and gardening materials and rubber boots, among others.

GCS Arts Curriculum specialist Nathan Street said he knows firsthand that teachers also need specialized art supplies, like paint brushes and canvasses, so as to allow students to maximize the art courses offered in each of their schools. Additionally, they need donated musical instruments and other items, like music sheet stands, to further their musical instruction.

All donations are tax-deductible and can be dropped off at the Teacher Supply Warehouse at 2601 Greengate Drive in Greensboro (open for donations from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.). Donations also can be dropped off in bins at Bank of North Carolina locations in Greensboro and High Point.

For more information on the Teacher Supply Warehouse, visit the Guilford Education Alliance's page.
