WFMY - Spending a lot of quality time with family and friends over the holidays can be a blast.  But too much party time can really throw your eating habits and healthy lifestyle off track.

A lot of us struggle with willpower when faced with holiday sweets.  So, we asked Travis LeFever of Willpower Works to share some of his willpower-building techniques.

LeFever said you have to remember the 5 Principles of Willpower:

-Willpower is a skill, not a talent
-Willpower gets stronger over time
-Practice makes permanent
-You always have a choice
-Choices have consequences

LeFever also said there are two quick ways to build willpower.

"Willpower is a core muscle.  If we build it in any area, it shows up in all areas.  So we need to pick a few simple things we can do every day to exercise it," said LeFever.

He said the simplest technique he has found to build willpower is to make your bed every day.  This brings structure to clutter and chaos, which increases self-control, and also gives you some insight into how habits work for you.

LeFever said if you already do this, pick another simple one-minute task, like praying, deep breathing exercises, or writing a thank-you note every morning.
