Biscuitville Pushes College Entrepreneurship

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Biscuitville stores in Greensboro are carrying, for a limited time, a secret item--a product created by four Greensboro College students who won the company's "Brand Your Biscuit" Biscuitville Bowl collegiate competition.

Biscuitville CEO Burney Jennings had breakfast Tuesday morning with the winning team--comprised of Rogers Mason, Matthew Troy, Benjamin Nuckols and Kyle Gatti.

Jennings said Biscuitville believes in collegiate competition and in encouraging aspiring entrepreneurs to create innovative ideas.

"For the students, we feel like it's the entrepreneurship, leadership, branding and market development, and it really gives them an opportunity to really dig deep and think about how to develop a product and how they would market that," Jennings said.

Jennings said competitions like the Brand Your Biscuit challenge benefit not only the students but also the company. He explained Biscuitville always is looking for innovative suggestions with which to create menu items appealing to the large college demographic in the Triad.

Mason, Troy, Nuckols and Gatti were among 64 local college teams who competed in the competition. Their winning product--the sausage, egg, cheese and gravy biscuit bowl--is available, upon request, in Greensboro stores until Nov. 7.

Of the idea behind the winning product, Troy said the team used the name of the competition as inspiration to create the biscuit bowl. Troy explained team used what it thinks are Biscuitville's best ingredients-sausage, egg and cheese.  Then, he said, the team added gravy to the bowl. "When you get to the bottom of the bowl, you think you're done, but really the gravy is soaked into that biscuit, and you get to the best part."

Prior to winning the competition, the team first had to make a YouTube video about its idea, and upon becoming a finalist, it made a presentation at the Biscuitville Headquarters.

The team won $5,000 for its charity of choice--the Learning Garden.

Mason said he learned immensely from participating in this competition. "When you get with a group of friends, and you have one common goal, your ideas just explode."

Mason issued advice to "Write a goal down, get with a group of people who have the same common goal and go out there and do it. It's as simple as that," Rogers said.
