BELMONT, N.C. -- The Belmont Police Department says the gunman who held three people hostage at a CVS store in Belmont has surrendered.
All three hostages had been released by 4:07 a.m. No injuries have been reported.
Police say shortly before 2 a.m., officers were en route to the store in response to a report of an armed robbery. That is when they received another report of shots fired and a possible hostage situation.
Police say when officers arrived on scene, Edward Scott Russ fired several shots at them with an SKS rifle. Officers then returned fire. At that time, officers became aware of hostages located in the store and called for backup.
Several state and local units were on scene--including the Gastonia Police Department Regional SWAT team.
A police negotiator maintained contact with the Russ during the standoff.
Russ is charged with First Degree Kidnapping, two counts of Second Degree Kidnapping, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Communicating Threats, two counts of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder. A judge set his bond at $5 million.
The CVS store is located at 6750 Wilkinson Blvd.
