Guilford County, NC -- Hair in your food, you know it sounds gross. But do you really know the dangers?

Chef Keith Gardiner from GTCC's Culinary Technology Department tells why everyone with hair, no matter the length, should wear a hair restraint if they're around your food.

Gardiner said the hair should be restrained enough that it's not flying around. A hat or a ponytail holder can work, but it has to be restrained.  He said, "If you can't tuck your up into your hat, you really should wear a hairnet."

Germs can easily be passed around from contact with hair. Gardiner said, "People will touch food or cigarettes or their keys and then touch their hair, then cross-contaminating the food when it comes in contact with it."

Gardiner also said hair itself can carry staph because its in contact with your own skin.

Restaurants can lose up to one point for workers not wearing those hair restraints.
