Greensboro, NC -- Volunteers at the Guilford County Animal Shelter are asking for help in reducing their dog and cat population.

In recent weeks, hundreds of pet owners have surrendered their animals to the shelter for several reasons - including not having money to care for the animals.

The intake has caused the shelter to be overcrowded.

The facility is designed to hold about between 800-900 pets but this week, there were about 1,500 animals living there.

According to Dana King with the shelter, adoptions are now half-price.
Cats now cost $20 to adopt; while dogs will cost $55.

If you're not ready for the full committment, the shelter is also looking for people to foster the animals for short periods of time.

GCAS is on Animal Shelter Drive off Wendover Avenue.

It's open Monday through Saturday from noon until 6 pm; then Sundays 1 pm until 5 pm.
