  • Meal at Dead Dog Saloon, asked waiter to bring half the fries this is the before.
  • I ate half the fries and half the sandwhich! Progress.
  • Low-country Boil with Turkey Sausage!

The last five days have been a whirlwind, from weighing on live television to trying to eat healthier.

I'm taking it one day at a time, and I can say for the first time in my life, I feel more in control than I ever have. I've also been taking it one day at a time and one bite at a time.

The support I've been receiving on all fronts has helped me in a huge way with snacking less, feeling better about what I'm doing and keeping me focused. I can't thank our WFMY News 2 viewers enough for their support.

Over the weekend, I had my first big hurdle, and that was vacation! I practiced portion control, rather than feeling like I was restricting myself while others indulged all around me. The first night we had low-country boil, and we substituted regular sausage for turkey sausage, and I couldn't even tell a difference.

The real challenge came the next day when I ate a restaurant called Dead Dog Saloon at Murrells Inlet in South Carolina. I didn't have a nutritional guide to go off of, so I looked for the first item--a grilled item. I decided to get a grilled chicken sandwich. I also looked for a side of fruit but didn't see it as an option. So, I got fries, but I told the waiter to hold half of them. He brought me less fries, and I ate even fewer of them--which, for me, was a triumph, considering I have fries with almost every meal. Not only did I eat half the fries but also half my sandwich. This meal taught me I can be in control while not depriving myself.

I learned more than anything over the weekend that I have confidence to battle the hurdles of vacation without completely losing control. It's better to have some sort of plan than none at all.
