Greensboro, NC - Here's proof learning can be fun!  Sometimes all it takes is the right teacher or in this case, the right beat.

Amy Barker teaches language arts to 6th grade students at Southern Guilford Middle.  She came up with a fun way to teach students the vocabulary words and themes they will see on their end of grade tests this month.

"We used the song 'Teach Me How To Dougie' and rewrote the lyrics so it would encompass the word wall words and those concepts that are most important for them on the EOG testing," explained Barker.  "I wanted them to remember It more than just for a Friday test and it had to be something that would stick with them a long time.  So putting it to the song they can recall it all the time."

Student Isacc Weldon listed some of the words in the song.  "Theme, main idea, assertion and inference.  There's a lot of words in there," he said.

"My goal is to make learning fun for them because if it's fun for them and they're excited and energetic about it then it's going to stick with them," said Barker.

"The way that it's written and the way that she teaches it has helped me in more ways than any other teacher has helped me," said Weldon.  "She's my favorite teacher -- so far," he added.
