Greensboro, NC --The trick to updating your home without spending too much cash is in the lighting.
Tom Garcia with Southern Evergreen was at Butler Lighting on N. Church St. Thursday morning, checking out some of the lighting fixtures and how they can add that sparkle to your home.
Priscilla Olinick, design professional at Butler Lighting said layering lighting is the way to go. Layering works by mixing in different lights with their functions.
Recess lighting is more about function than decoration, while chandeliers don't offer as much light, but can help make a room feel warmer. Olinick said lamps and under-cabinet lighting are also a nice touch in addition to recess lighting.
Tom Garcia explained how to save money on the light bulbs that you chose to go with those fixtures. Incandescent light bulbs (you probably still have a few in your cabinets) get really hot. Garcia said that wastes energy and money.
LED lights, he said, have lower in price as the years go on. He said some bulbs can offer up to 25,000 hours of light.
Garcia said CFL bulbs should be more of transitional lights. He said they are not as good as LED lights, and they have mercury in them which could be a disposal issue. Garcia said to switch to LED as quickly as you can.
