As House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama lead their parties negotiations over the fiscal cliff, there are lessons to be learned from their talks.

Jason Husser, Assistant Professor of the Elon University Poll, spoke with News 2 about negotiation techniques being using in Washington that we all can use in day-to-day life.

1) Simplify: Focus on the points that matter most. Democrats and Republicans are both simplifying complex negotiations. Their argument to voters has primarily been over taxes and government spending.

2) Make it emotional: These issues are hard to understand and potentially dry. By making them emotional, you can bring more allies in the game.

3) Beware of "bad faith" negotiators: Sometimes politicians enter negotiations with no desire to compromise and to let the negotiations fail on purpose. If the side you are negotiating with is working with this strategy, rethink your approach.

4) Build trust: Without trust between both parties, compromise is hard to reach. Negotiations require give and take.

5) Remember the long game: Both political parties are looking beyond this one dispute to a longer struggle over taxes and spending. Don't win one encounter if it means setting yourself up for failure.
