Pilot Mountain, NC - The wildfire on Pilot Mountain is 80% contained, according to the North Carolina Department of Parks and Recreation, but it could burn up to 1,000 acres before it is extinguished.
According to Charlie Peek with the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, few active flames remain. Pilot Mountain State Park will stay closed for a few weeks.
The fire began as a controlled burn over 180 acres, but the fire jumped the initial fire line on Thursday, and crews have been working to contain and extinguish the fire ever since.
Peek told News 2 that they expect to have the fire extinguished this week, saying, "We're going to have higher humidity tomorrow, we're going to have very calm winds, at least no more wind than we had today."
Peek went on to say, "We're quite confident that we can keep it within that containment line and allow it to burn itself out within that containment line."
