Kernersville - Polls opened at 6:30 am Tuesday morning in the swing state of North Carolina, and voters were lined up early to cast their ballot for President and local races.

Polls are open until 7:30 pm, but already North Carolina has seen record breaking turnout for early voting.

Approximately 2.7 million early votes were cast, beating the 2008 record of 2.4 million.

The Forsyth County Board of Elections Director Rob Coffman told News 2 he believes the majority of Forsyth county's votes have already been cast, which should lead to shorter lines today.

Coffman said for voters looking to avoid long lines, vote during work hours as the lines before and after work will be the longest.
