Cyberspace -- It's been up for three years. Now the paywall separating people from Hollywood news reported by Variety is coming down. And with its collapse comes the fall of another effort to get Internet users to pay for information many have become used to getting for free. The chairman and CEO of Variety's parent firm calls the paywall "an interesting experiment that didn't work" -- and that dropping it Friday represents what company insiders call "the end of an error." Once the paywall comes down, Variety will put out a new one-day-a-week-only print edition, while making its available online without a subscriber fee.
