BURLINGTON, NC -- A murder trial in Alamance County is on hold after one of the defense attorneys in the case suffered a heart attack.
The Times-News of Burlington reports Terry Alford was stricken over the weekend and underwent surgery on Saturday at WakeMed in Raleigh. Co-counsel Stephen Freedman made the announcement in court Monday.
Superior Court Judge W. Osmond Smith III postponed the trial for four weeks and sent jurors home. He ordered the Alamance County Clerk of Superior Court's Office to update jurors weekly on Alford's prognosis and when the trial might resume.
Freeman said doctors expect Alford to be in recovery for at least a month. More tests were planned for Monday.
Alford was defending Robert Dennis Dixon, who's accused of plotting his stepmother's murder in November 2007.
