Maggie Valley, NC -- They just don't see snow like this, this early in the year, even up here at 5,000 feet. They've gotten eight inches of snow In a matter of hours. Boone recorded 24 inches of snow in one day.

As News 2 crews drove to Maggie Valley, they didn't see snow anywhere until arriving at the ski area on top of this mountain.
There was no snow in the valley.

What you see now is the ski resort taking advantage of the superstorm. They're making more snow so they can start ski season a lot earlier than usual. Last year, they didn't open the slopes until mid-November. A few years back, they were closed until December. But Cataloochee Ski Area owner Chris Bates said, "This is a strange storm and certainly devastating for a lot of people. We were lucky and fortunate that for once, we got tropical snow. The snow we have here on the ground came out of a tropical system"

Wednesday broke a couple of records at Cataloochee. It was only the second time in 52 years that they opened the end of October. And 300 people skied there -- a Halloween record.

Bates said he saw license plates from Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina all in their parking lot.
