High Point -- High Point Police tell WFMY News 2 that a hit and run driver crashed into a rental van near High Point University Saturday, ditched the car and ran away from the wreck.

Investigators said it happened just before 6pm near the corner of Lexington and College Drive.  It's just behind the school's athletic complex.

High Point Police Lt. J. Yandle said the van was carrying Appalachain State University Track students, who were just leaving HPU.

Several witnesses called 911.  Police stated a search is underway for the person or people who were in the 1995 Burgundy Ford Explorer.  They found the car abandoned on Guyer Street.

Yandle said the van's driver reported minor injuries.  The students did not get hurt.  Police are asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 336-889-4000.
