Undated -- A trained weather spotter reported a Tornado outside of Shelby, NC this evening.  It was part of a system that sparked  multiple tornado warnings for the surrounding counties.

According to the National Climatic Data Center it was the first time that a tornado was spotted in January for either Burke or Cleveland counties where most of the damage was reported.  Meteorologists Grant Gilmore and Leigh Brock discovered that it is just as rare in the Triad.

From 1950 to 2011, every county in our viewing area has seen a tornado. All those twisters occurred between the months of February and November. Pittsylvania County, Virginia saw the most with 18 tornadoes. While only one county in our area has experience a tornado in January: Surry County. That F1 tornado touched down on January 21, 1959.
